Renewable technology options:
Static roof mounted solar PV - widely available from multiple installers - £5,000 approximately upwards
Static ground mount PV - widely available from multiple installers - £4,000 approximately upwards
Solar tracking - available, column mounted PV systems that track the sun all day - £4,000 approximately upwards
Mounting options - ground screws (sustainable option) or concrete (less sustainable and more time consuming option)
Solar thermal - used to heat hot water
Solar diverter - used to divert surplus solar power to heat immersion tank - we supply these
Ground source heat pumps - widely available, not cheap, but effective for new builds - although pricing is now coming down as there is more competition in the market place.
Air source heat pumps - less expensive, but not quite so effective - Octopus is now quoting for ASHP's from £3,000.
For those who applied during the lifetime of the scheme, the Renewable Heat Incentive Scheme (RHI) is paid quarterly for seven years for the amount of clean, green, renewable energy produced by your heat pump system. (The scheme closed for new applicants in March 2022.)
The Clean Heat Grant was unsuccessful as the paperwork made applying extremely difficult. It morphed into the Boiler Upgrade Scheme with the government contributing a fixed sum.
Infra Red heating - widely available, including wall hung options, at different price points.
Battery Storage - Wallhung and modular systems are available - from around £5,000
Electric vehicle charge points - available from multiple suppliers with a government grant - approximately £400 upwards
Domestic Wind Turbines - available but expensive to buy one that generates enough power to be valuable
Other sustainability options:
Rainwater harvesting - water butts, a very good start - available from DIY and garden centres
Grey water management - re-using (non-foul) water for other household tasks manually or via an underground tank
Sewage disposal via reed beds or Aquatron equipment. Sewage is a valuable resource that can be composted.
Insulation, double glazing and other measures help to prevent heat loss from our older leaky housing stock.
LED light bulbs use far less power than halogen.
Insulation - older houses lose a huge amount of power owing to leaky windows, lack of cavity wall and roof insulation.
