ENERGY PRICE CAP
The price cap rose to an annual level of £4,279 in January 2023, but bill payers remained protected under the government’s Energy Price Guarantee (EPG). The energy price cap level indicates how much consumers on their energy supplier’s basic tariff would pay if the EPG were not in place. The price cap has been in place since January 2019, and it is a legislative requirement for Ofgem to regularly review the level at which it is set. It ensures an energy supplier can recoup its efficient costs, whilst making sure customers do not pay a higher amount for their energy than they should. The price cap, as set out in law, does this by setting a maximum suppliers can charge per unit of energy. Bill payers are now protected by the Government’s new Energy Price Guarantee until the end of September 2023, as confirmed by the Chancellor. You can see the different rates by geographical area here. The price cap was reduced in July as wholesale prices reduced. The Energy Price Guarantee protects consumers reducing the unit cost of electricity and gas so that that a typical dual fuel direct debit annual bill from July 2023 is £2,074, down from £2,500. From 1st October, the price cap will drop by a further 7% to an average of £1,923 per year after Ofgem reduced the price cap again. This follows sustained falls in wholesale gas and electricity prices and will reduce bills to their lowest level in 18 months. Experts predict that prices may well go up again in January. Standing charges will go up slightly to 29.62p per day for gas and 53.36p for electricity. This means in an average month, you will pay £24.60 approx just to cover your standing charge - before you turn a light on.
Increased prices means that the return on investment when you install solar pv has shortened, even though there are currently no government subsidies in place.
